PSA: smoking is almost as bad for you as chatbots
@j-g00da at least smoking has the ability to look sexy
@ozzelot yeah, at least while smoking you are killing yourself for a reason!
@j-g00da and somewhere, for someone, that reason is to be skillfully photographed with a flexaretík!
@j-g00da i haven't in my life seen someone operate chatjippity and thought "this deserves to be immortalized on a 6x6 square of ilford hp5"
on this halloween let's look at some cursed connectors. may i present: the DB-20
or perhaps the DB-5 is more to your taste
this one is like if someone recreated a DE-9 connector from a verbal description, having never seen the original.
some people call this a centronics-style connector, but it is a Micro Ribbon connector with some extra coaxials...
the fabled DE-0
it's not cute! connectors only do this when they're in distress
this is what happens when someone asks "instead of two connectors, let's use just one connector"
two engineers fought over what kind of connector to use on a product. "a DE-9" shouted one. "no, screw terminals!" screamed the other. "why not both" said the small girl, calmly.
and this thing? i have no idea. i've never seen anything like it.
this may look like an ordinary 27-pin circular connector, but i assure you that is a standard banana next to it, not some sort of fake plastic stunt banana.
be careful to fully specify your connector. don't just say "i want a 15 pin d sub connector" because you might get one of these.
someone needed to get 9 different fluids from one place to another, and wanted a way to connect 9 fluid lines quickly and easily. well...
need a higher current rating on your connector? need it really fast? try using the "scale" command in your CAD program
this circular connector has 7 pins. 6 of them for electrical current and the remaining one for blood
it's a baby ISA connector!
this is a "Magic Bus" expansion connector, presumably some sort of dark magic.
here is a DE-7 connector. you can tell it's not a photoshop because it's a video clip.
all these connectors exist physically and can hurt you. particularly if you step on them.
how about this mini USB connector? i think the UART converter is built in, so it's actually kind of clever. evil of course, but also clever.
apparently there is a mini RCA connector
when two DE-15 connectors love each other very much and get together, soon they'll have a few extra pins
how about a DE-3?
big ol' waffle connector. this one is used to connect IBM tape units to mainframe computers.
a 12-pin D-uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
not technically a connector but sometimes you need a 0.1" header jumper to skip a pin. so they have this thing for that.
oh i almost forgot this one. i couldn't find a DB-25 connector in my stuff when i was soldering up this board. i found a DB-23 instead 😬
@tubetime dunno how these are called. Took a picture of these dangling off the just-below-nose section of a V2/A-4 rocket in a museum
@tubetime I remember when D23s were almost a thing. Can't remember what devices used them, though...
@tubetime no. Just no. This is where I draw the line.
This should not have been made. This is clearly a job for a 3.5mm jack with a screw collar.
No. Bad IBM, bad.
@tubetime
RS232 with software flow control?
Back in the day, we had a ton of those, with (the few remaining) terminals connected.
@tubetime These heavy buggers are a complete PITA when the stack of cables weighs more than the instrument they're connected to.
@StumpyTheMutt i have floppy drives that use these
@tubetime
Motorola and Storno loved using them for RF signals inside radios as well. Annoying connectors to source.
@tubetime
It does have the USB Uart and level shifter built in. It's a product by FTDI.
I don't think they have bothered to do an USB-C version yet.
@tubetime ISA Express x1 was a flop, even though everyone could move their existing designs over to it with some shift registers and a clock divider. It was a real shame.
@xek hahaha nice, i was trying to come up with a good bit to go along with it. guess those 74LS199 shift registers just weren't quite fast enough
@tubetime @xek you'll be delighted to hear of the PO74G374A, allowing us to build the parallal PCIe (v1, x1) that the PC platform always deserved.
https://www.potatosemi.com/potatosemiweb/74Logic.html
@tubetime Medical devices have some fun connectors, like this one that carries air, fluid and signals:
@tubetime Ach, used to work with assembly line machinery that used a connector like that, except with more pins. 26? 30? Something like that. The receptacle has two big honkin' over-center latches that hook onto those four pins on the outside to make sure you get a good, reliable connection. At least that was the theory...
@tubetime this is a connector from Harting. Definitely not cursed and in wide use in industry and rail
@tubetime at work we use this connector for heating elements in tool making. It’s common in Germany.
@tubetime Well we have D-Sub with 2 rows, High Density D-Sub (DE-15) with 3 rows, now this is low density D-Sub
@tubetime Oh hey, our locomotives link together using connectors much like these :)
@sen yep that's exactly what it is! a friend of mine found it near some railroad tracks. and he found the banana at the grocery store
@tubetime [re: huge circular 27-pin] multiple-working connector from 1960s Bri'ish diesel trains perchance?
@tubetime that isn’t actually that different from a genuine socapex connector. (I didn’t have a banana so used a can of Diet Coke for scale.)
@tubetime Can I proffer T568B, T568A, and B865T?
@tubetime I love how it makes it physically possible to plug in upside down and the result is probably that no connection is made. like the USB A curse but silent failure.
@tubetime Is that the one that the Amiga or Apple community had to raise like $10,000 for to get a connector company to make a new mold so they could be produced again?
@tubetime This thread is “what if Nanoraptor but real.” (Unless these are not real and I’m missing a joke.)
@mwichary ohhh these are VERY real, i assure you. 👻
There’s some serious sonic840 energy here and I love it.

@tubetime Just buy a 30-year old boat and start replacing (perfectly working) 30 year old electronics... you can get the device for nothing. Then you want to buy modern connectors to make it work in a boat. NOW you do not have an economy anymore. The RF-terminal for $10, the replacing 20-pole connector for 405. Not much fun.
@tubetime You should mention the db8 on APC UPSs. Plug in a standard console cable, bam, the UPS shuts down 🤬

@prokyonid @_the_cloud that's an 80s action thriller thing to draw more viewers
@thomasfuchs @_the_cloud I dunno man, I'm a big 80s action movie guy (even the propaganda movies) and the scene with Reese and Sarah is the only one that ever felt weird to watch with other people
In the Binance version of reality where compromise happened via a developer laptop:
1) Was this laptop running an appropriate EDR? If so, how did it remain compromised and active for so long?
2) If it wasn't, why was it in such a privileged position that it could trigger this outcome?
The point of entry may have been a single developer's laptop, but the fact that a single developer's laptop *could* be the point of entry is a systemic failure, not an individual one
The beyondcorp white paper was over a decade ago and yet we're still in a position where privileged access is permitted without verification that the endpoint is in a secure state first!
But also: you don't want to be the developer that a press release is about? Never use a personal device to do your job. Make it your employer's responsibility. You might enjoy your work less, but you're going to be *so* much safer.
@mjg59 Also you are going to be so much safer, because the endpoint software won't be able to compromise or wipe your personal data if those are all on another device.
@RogerBW To its credit this is something Android largely does very well - the only failure case I'm aware of is when dependency leakage between Google corp accounts and the host profile allowed for unsatisfied dependencies after the work profile was wiped which resulted in bootlooping, but that should never have hit external users. I'd be more worried about being compelled to hand my compromised device over to corp security.
@mjg59 Or even your uncompromised device when you leave the job. As with email addresses, it's much cleaner to be able to say "all the work stuff is over there and when I leave I can't get at it any more, all the me stuff is over here and you have no contact with it".
@RogerBW Again, I do trust Android's work profile stuff in this situation - any company that doesn't trust the remote wipe of the work profile shouldn't be supporting it
@mjg59 after my own¹ shitpost on the subject I started thinking about how I would build safety into an online exchange. Then I realized I was wasting my time; because by definition anyone trustworthy and sensible enough to handle more money than a handful of low-denomination coins never gets involved in magic beans in the first place.
I interviewed at Canonical a few years back.
It was for some kind of 3rd level support role that one could imagine dealing with sensitive customer logs etc.
Got far enough in to hear they would not pay for a work PC, we were expected to supply our own but would get an allowance for an upgrade after a few years.
My view of their security posture dropped considerably at that point.
Having later seen the full horror that is their hiring process I am glad they declined.
@mjg59 Separately from the technical angle, I think stories with a single villain are much easier to sell: "this guy messed up" rather than "the organisation should have done a thing but it didn't".
@RogerBW "An individual messed up" (vs "An individual was actively malicious") is inherently an attempt to avoid institutional responsibility
@mjg59 Yes, that too. And of course even if they do an honest incident evaluation, and come up with a cause other than "the egotistical founder didn't want anyone to have power over him", by the time actual responsibility can be assigned the thing will have been forgotten by the public.
@mjg59 on the EDR topic: did you come across anything decent in the linux opensource landscape? Small environment (~10 endpoints, mostly laptops), high impact if compromised.
@blmt Urgh. I've never actually been the person making that decision so I've never looked into it. If free software is the goal then I think the best answer right now is probably using free tooling to impose strict policy and hope that's sufficient (and I'm scared that it's not going to be with the way things are going)
@mjg59 Before facebook I wondered aloud to some friends that if someone solves loneliness online somehow, they'll make infinite amount of money.
Instead, I think social media has made people more lonely.
@mjg59 the flip side is important too, for *you*, the employee; don’t use your work device for personal things. Especially not banking, etc. And make sure you have everything you need to access payslips, benefits information, etc, without using your work sign on. In the current environment of layoffs, it *sucks* to suddenly find out you can’t get at something like that; and HR are going to be dealing with a lot of other people.
@mjg59 If a single developer can run off with billions of dollars "worth" of cryptocurrency, nationstate actors are probably wasting money hiring hackers instead of just bribing someone with that access.
For the record I think that with about 24 hours of Cybersecurity Awareness Month left, at this point I'm sufficiently aware of cybersecurity.
I don't think any additional cybersecurity awareness is necessary. This is plenty, you know? More than plenty. Enough, I would say. I get it. Awareness confirmed. Ample awareness. We're good.
I spent some of today experimenting with working with a colleague on improving the Bluetooth connection process.
That's right, we tried pair programming ;)
@demoographics why does Mastodon not have a 'groan' button distinct from the 'favourite' button
More "boring" service providers who are content with a modest profit margin and slow organic growth, please. I don't even care if the UI looks "dated" and new features take a long time to be built. Traditional boring bare metal, only add new customers when you have capacity to support it, whatever.
A company of 50+ year old tech veterans who have been laid off and left behind from age discrimination just looking to keep the bills paid until retirement.
Run it like a co-op, like a little credit union that isn't looking to expand quickly, just serve their little niche of the community.
the fact that "I hacked a website" / "I hacked a javascript library" can lead to a TWO BILLION DOLLAR theft is fucking wacko. also what the fuck do you even do with that quantity of cryptocurrency as an attacker. it's not like you can just ask some non-KYC exchange to hand you a billion dollars in any currency, monopoly money or otherwise. you might as well have stolen an aircraft carrier.
@gsuberland the trick is to be one of a handful of entities on the planet that would also be quite satisfied with stealing an aircraft carrier

wait mastodon shows link cards AND polls in the same post now? did it always do that and i just never noticed? what the frick
anyway to elaborate on this i'm thinking of holding off on the first public release until it's more of a complete experience of a vertical slice of what the game will eventually be. but i'm not 100% sure that's the way to go
@eniko Remember, we who follow you and interact would try out anything you release. We might not be a great representation of future buyers.
(But we might be the target for a super exclusive secret pre-alpha very early test release.)
@eniko Doesn't show up on phanpy, so maybe it's client-specific?
In either case, this looks awesome, instant purchase when available for sure. I also chuckled a bit at it following «the long standing artisanal software engineering tradition of "not invented here"».
@eniko oooh can you attach a post AND an image too now?
@oblomov bet you can't
@oblomov :o
@eniko so, what were you betting? 8-D
@oblomov still cant quote and image though
@eniko yeah yeah stop moving the goalposts and pay up ;-)
Joking aside, I've always thought that Mastodon had some brilliant opportunities for managing links and cards better than the commercial silos, e.g. by putting the card after the paragraph for EACH link, and this would have been perfectly compatible with quotes, but I've stopped expecting things.
@eniko I might be tempted to suggest farming (crop and livestock) before fighting but that really depend on the kind of game you want to make
@eniko Sorry, release as alpha, beta or full version?
I think you should release when the multiplayer part is implemented to test it as soon as possible. Multiplayer is a major hassle to get it right and the more testing you get out of it, and as early as possible, the absolutely best.
@eniko I think having the gimmick in there (even if it’s not all of it) is key. It feels like the ultima “spice” sets it apart from destroy/place block.
I want to try it out and want more, not go “oh ok”.
@eniko
FWIW, Minetest (now Luanti) for a long time only had mining and crafting without any mobs, and it seemed to get along just fine.
@shadow53 yeah I guess combat tends to be kinda vestigial in these kinds of games
I'm hoping to beat that low bar but maybe I don't have to wait until I do to release something playable
@SmashToday @shadow53 leaning?
I was making a 16 year old Call of Duty joke.
In Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward removed the ability to lean in the PC version despite it being in all previous versions of the shooter, because it was a console port. And when questioned about it, IWs response was the game wasn't balanced for leaning.
@SmashToday oh lol
i have never played a call of duty
@eniko limited testing releases that are just creative mode?
IIRC that's how Minecraft started. Just walking around plopping dirt blocks in space. It was only compelling for an hour or so, but still a nice chill experience.
@eniko I would say, release it when you have what makes Block Game unique.
I haven't played Ultima so I don't know what that is, but gathering crafting and building is something we already did way too much over on Minecraft.
So if you were to release it in that state people would think it's just Minecraft but without all the other things you can do in Minecraft and move on, potentially missing the updates that differentiate it.
@fabiosantoscode the problem with that is i would need to have randomly generated towns with npcs on schedules and that's a huge ass feature that relies on other big features
@eniko I was playing devil's advocate, and based on screenshots, I had the thought: "It looks like Minecraft, what is the extra twist that would make me buy it?". Then I read the elevator pitch: "An Ultima/Elder Scrolls meets Minecraft voxel sandbox game with building and crafting."
The elevator pitch sold it well to me, with reservations: it seem to be a bit ambitious (as in: orders of magnitude) for a 1-person team.
@dragonfi technically not a 1 person team though
@eniko It is what you write in the FAQ though:
Who's making this?
Right now it is I, Eniko Fox, who is making it alone in my spare time.
(I'm just arguing from the position of wanting this to succeed as well as possible.)
@eniko what I actually want to play myself: gather craft and build
what I advise from the marketing perspective: with enemies and combat OR ANY OTHER aspect which will make the game look more unique and not "yet another Minecraft clone" - at glance!
something I always tell my clients: you WILL be compared to other games solely on how the game looks like on the surface level, it is unavoidable
@hardpenguin13 i mean, it'll have the decoration system that lets you place items in the world the elder scrolls style
minecraft doesn't have that. but maybe that's not enough
@eniko I am sure there are more things that make your game different and more unique, it's just the matter of surfacing them to the people who first see the game
@hardpenguin13 i mean there will be, but they're going to require big systems, not the kind of stuff i can put in an early access prototype
@eniko a disclaimer window popup after launch, then
And some things that are easy to see but dont take too much time to implement
git diff cheatsheet
would love to know what you think is missing!
@b0rk "only show the diff for one file" can also be used to only show the diff within one subdirectory. In a large code base that's often useful, e.g. show the changes within `src` to leave out the boring changes in `tests`.
(I'd like it even more if there was an option to _exclude_ a particular subdir, but I went looking for that just this morning and didn't find one.)
One of my own favourite git diff options is --no-index, which lets me use it like plain `diff`, on two files that have nothing to do with a git repository at all. But that's surely a matter of taste – I only do that because I happen to like the other UI features of git diff (colour, auto pipe through less, occasionally --color-words) and don't want to lose them when I'm diffing in a non-git context.
Perhaps, `git diff ":(exclude)subdir"`
@DHowett ooh, apparently that works, thank you!
But how on earth did you find that? It's taken me ten minutes _even_ knowing it was there. Even after I knew about it I wasn't able to find it by looking in obvious parts of the git documentation.
I eventually grepped the git source¹, and found references to this kind of thing in release notes under the name "magic pathspec". In the actual git man pages that phrase occurs just once, in 'git-glossary', under the section on 'pathspec' in general – and aha, that _is_ where this kind of thing is documented.
I see that it's not in the man page for 'git diff' because it's more general than that, like the way that the man page for 'git rev-parse' is where you find all the general-purpose stuff about how to specify commits in lots of different ways (like ^ and ~3 etc).
But I'd never have thought to look up a description of _functionality_ in the glossary: that's surely where you go for "what does this word even mean?", and if I'd seen the word "pathspec", I would have assumed that I already knew what it meant. Plus, 'git diff' doesn't even use the word "pathspec" at all – it just says "path"!
@b0rk, if you're still working on improving git's own documentation, something just jumped to the top of my own list of things that could use a little improvement. :-)
¹ imagine I said all of this in Arthur Dent's sarcastic tones from the start of Hitchhikers
@simontatham @DHowett every time I open the git repo on github I see this issue about making a dedicated page for pathspecs (and moving the section from the glossary to that dedicated page) and I think it’s a really good idea https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git/issues/1971
it’s a bit tricky for me because I don’t understand the magic pathspec syntax so it’s hard for me to explain it :)
re discoverability: do you know about `git help --user-interfaces` and would you have thought to look there for a guide on this?
@simontatham @DHowett yeah I would have assumed almost nobody has ever heard of it :). I’ll think about other ways it could be discovered too. Probably the DESCRIPTION section of the `git diff` man page just should mention it near the beginning.
@simontatham @DHowett Also I’m surprised that `git diff ":(exclude)subdir”` works because the man page doesn’t say that that form can accept a pathspec. But it’s not that surprising if the man page is wrong.
@b0rk @DHowett now that I know about this, I expect I'm going to be using it all the time!
Having read the glossary section, it turns out the prefix ':!' is a shorter version of ':(exclude)'. And you can specify more than one of them, and you can use them in lots of useful commands, in particular all of diff, grep and log:
git diff rev1 rev2 -- :!boringdir1 :!boringdir2
git grep regex :!boringdir1 :!boringdir2
git log :!boringdir1 :!boringdir2
@simontatham you have successfully nerdsniped me and maybe I will submit something like this https://github.com/jvns/git/commit/a7080d1329fd99a3de6219bec06caa71f54389d2
(though I need to check that everywhere I said “this can accept a pathspec” is uh actually true)
@b0rk *please* tell me to go away if I'm being too demanding, but I think this would also benefit from a few concrete examples, now that there's a whole man page with room for an EXAMPLES section. The first couple of paragraphs describing the general syntax are pretty confusing – looks rather like BNF or a syntax diagram translated into prose – and some examples would help a user check if they'd followed the instructions correctly.
Maybe also some discussion of what to do if there's a literal colon in a pathname in your repository? (My instant knee-jerk reaction to "this character is special" in more or less any context is "in that case, what if I need to say it literally?".)
But I realise that here you're just moving the existing text into a more sensible place, and rewriting it is maybe a separate project.
@simontatham yeah i 1000000% agree that examples would make a huge difference so i’m glad you think so too :). will try to save this tweet somewhere so i remember to look at it later
i think it’ll be better to do it in two steps for process reasons tho

What is the last thing (that you're aware of) you bought because of seeing an ad?
@prahou
the goddamn ikea manul
@prahou (but that ad certainly wasn't delivered through any typical advertising network. google had no hand in this)
@jn ads come in many forms, for example i think a discarded coca cola can in the street qualifies as an ad
@prahou usually a video game or computer hardware that I was going to buy anyway, but forgot the release date.
Hard to say. If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have bought it… unless I eventually remembered.
@ADHDruid fair enough. i'm sure most of the things we buy, we buy because of ads, but a lot of those purchases feel automatic.
i'm basically just wondering when you specifically see an ad, are aware that it's an ad, and then proceed to buy it.
A toothbrush recommended to me by my dentist
@prahou I guess when I was a child I was exposed to several cereals adds that I ended up eating so I may have dragged the stuff in mom's cart myself in a blurr. *_*
20y since then I have no recollection of brain control (they may just have gotten better at it thought aaaaah).
@prahou Holy powdered energy drinks, in 2024 or early 2025. Have switched to them completely, no more carrying heavy ones from the shop or resorting to carbonated ones when the only non-carbonated one is not available. Before that Vivaia shoes in 2021, made of old plastic bottles, foldable for travel, machine washable, also bought a few pairs since. I used affiliate links from YT for both.
And before that, I do not remember 🤷
@rhelune Pretty cool examples! Thank you. Also this is now an add for Vivaia shoes!
I love how that works.
@prahou One would have to get very generous about the definition of "ad".
Because even then every single instance that came to mind I was effectively looking for that sort of thing or "solutions to XYZ problem".
Is a game trailer an ad? Especially if one's deliberately seeking out trailers of a certain genre?
@mu What brand? and how many tomatoes out of 10 would you rate it?
@prahou The Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, which was finally on a discount after i decided that i wanna play it now.
@max how much was it?
@max what makes it different from a free adblocker?
@max now the important question. will you advertise it here?
@max Mister Mobilek loves this sort of stuff!
@prahou @max I remember how I was ripped off when the shop assistant in my city's electronics store installed me an adblocker that costed me 2450 hryvnias (73,5€ at the time). I didn't ask for it, only found out that they did this because I looked into the receipt a few years later when I wanted to remember how much my laptop costed. And it was a license for two years, not even a perpetual one. They also installed a crappy antivirus that was cutting the connection to discord when I was trying to share my screen. I don't go to there now. Coincidentally, the store shares its name with a criminal network in Sweden.
@max The thing I said in my head was much, much more obscene. I heard from my friend that shop assistants in this stores network earn money only from additional services. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, well... I am sorry for people who have to work there.
@prahou I don't see many ads so this is hard to know. Probably a jungle vinyl?
@prahou a passive drum machine/synth that was on sale, and advertised through a newsletter I had signed up for because I wanted to support the tiny company.
@prahou Video games from browsing a steam sale page. Oh, and some paints for Warhammer.
Ads are a lot more tolerable when you're the one deciding when to go look at them.
@prahou some small power tools in neat cases, and a combined desk hoover / air duster / air pump thing.
@prahou I can't recall anything. I only see ads in the street and they are for things that don't interest me.
@prahou That's an interesting question. I can't think of a time I've consciously bought a thing brand new because of an ad, I have contempt for ads for new things.
But at the same time I'm absolutely riddled with desire to buy things I think of as historically notable pieces of technology, often for their aesthetic and sentimental appeal - commodity fetishism - often this is fueled by advertisements decades old by companies that either no longer exist or are complete opposites now.
@kyle_pegasus That's a good point!
Buying something because of an *ad* from a company that no longer exists is something to think about. Does it stop being an ad because now it cannot fulfill its original goal of enriching the company?
@prahou I'd say that it doesn't. Maybe advertising is something you produce and it doesn't expire. maybe it effects me because I let my guard down around it, because I tell myself it's a historical artifact, and so it gets me because it has not become any less of a weapon of manipulation even though it's creator is dead
Maybe other people aren't vulnerable to ancient advertising because they are manipulated by the current? After all, New thing better than old is basically the message
@prahou hungry jacks (aka burger king) was giving away some pretty nice glasses with a burger and something meal deal
@prahou scrolled through my bank to give you a good response
got reminded of an unpaid invoice (done now)
most recent thing i paid for (with my data) after seeing an ad is signing up somewhere after already giving them money to get more stuffs (admittedly they now think i'm called charlie kirk)
@prahou Professor Layton and the Curious Village for the nintendo DS, the local charity shop had ads on the side of the building showing what they were selling
@prahou subscription for ad free search engine
@prahou
I stopped buying swastikas because I found out I could draw my own from a magazine article!
@prahou It could've been a book by Kim Crawley (here on the fediverse!) called "Recovering After Gen AI" (which was less an ad and more someone posting about a thing they did), but it could also be my "God forbid a girl lie a little to her investors" hat that I saw in an email from the Cards Against Humanity's clothing company. 😅
I wish they made ads for the things I want to buy. Then I would know about them.
But I guess I could say my "dictionary camera" I bought because I saw an ad. A 30 year old reprint, but still
@elithebearded
had one.
even got images from it.
the orig gangsta 'loss leader'
those tiny film rolls?
*No one* wanted them.
lol!
@prahou I'd rather not say
@prahou
Define ad. Does Mark Zuckerberg whispering sweet nothings into my ear while I sleep count as an ad?
@prahou Oh heck, I see so few ads nowadays. Does self-promotion count as an ad?
If so, then maybe the #KnightsOfGuinevere art book.
Maybe I've bought some stuff from promoted listings on online marketplaces.
someone in the comments of my no AI notice is very butthurt lol
big "i am very angry and wish to speak to the manager of people not liking AI" energy on this one
@eniko it's like going to a market and start complaining to a hand-made art piece salesperson that amazon exists
@eniko "You indie developer who shipped actual indie games without - and even before! - the advent of genAI should absolutely listen to my uninformed hot take on the topic, or else!"
i love the "but you don't understand, i *have* to use AI otherwise it's too hard for me" argument
literal definition of skill issue my guy
@eniko I had one neat game idea, but it required a lot of artwork that would have been infeasible; ai use would have enabled it. Community reaction - just the mention of ai use - killed the project. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends.
@eniko Indie game development's a pretty risky venture no matter how you slice it... lots of solid games have been made that never get anywhere near profitable for various reasons, often in spite of quite high quality work... so I'm not sure why folks seem to believe that using the slop machine is going to improve their odds of standing out and succeeding... seems to me the opposite is far more likely.
@eniko i fully agree with you about AI but even before that anyone who wields the argument about the utility cost of not using your personal time making money in other business has the soul of a landlord
@eniko ai... Don't understand? The "no ai" notice doesn't change anything for them when they use ai, does it??
@leberschnitzel they're mad that people don't like AI to the point someone would make something like this and it would then become popular
@eniko No, see, you don't understand: they're just a smol bean and that means nobody's allowed to criticise their choices even implicitly.
@eniko This person clearly had no interest in making indie games until he thought he could shit one out on the cheap and rake in apparently millions of dollars (how else would those multi-million dollar indie games be profitable?). Dude's in for a rude awakening when he finds out what the industry is like.
1. Where are those super high quality cheaply made AI games?
2. It’s a socioeconomic issue, if I was independently wealthy or we all had a living UBI I wouldn’t care much, human made things would still exist and people can live.
3. What about flooding the market? If I can make a game for let’s say $5000 in token cost, and 5,000 other people made that same game right after me. Can I even make that $5000 back?
Plus artistic and environmental arguments etc. The “I don’t care” above doesn’t include the environment nor the market effects (RAM prices etc) and such.
Sometimes it feels like arguing about social Darwinism with people when it comes to AI:/
@eniko So this person's response to "indie games require a lot of investment from a person to be done" is "burn money in the slop machine".
what?
@eniko It's such a mild expression of anti-AI sentiment, too. Like, it's just saying that your specific project didn't use AI. Why are they so threatened by that?
@BathysphereHat because I made it, and it's popular, which means people hate AI, which means their AI slop won't be well received. And not only that but I'm actively trying to poison the well for AI by showing that hating AI isn't just acceptable, it's good actually
@eniko
If an indie game costs $10,000 or more to make, you're either using wrong tools, or you're using that money to pay for marketing. Every single aspect of an indie game can be made 100% free, with free tools (provided access to computer exists). Sure, if you wanna pay artists who do an aspect better than you, it costs, but I rather listen to PC-beeper churning out random notes on EGA palette of ASCII characters on a game that has no text, than wanna see any AI in any aspect of the process.
One of my friends gave me this for helping him move house, mint condition and in working order. What a load of fun!
@limneticvillains
Trying to find film and get it developed is an adventure in itself.
@simon it came with 2 reels of film, one original from the 70s and one from 2019 that is still viable.
@limneticvillains @simon What is it super 8? Film in certain sizes is still available and you can develop yourself. Enjoy!
@SamanthaJaneSmith @simon yes tis Super 8. :)
@limneticvillains @simon Nice, enjoy the movie making
@SamanthaJaneSmith @simon I'll have to do something with it!
@limneticvillains is that super 8 or double 8mm (like standard 8 where you shoot down one half of 16mm then turn the film around to shoot down the other half). Some of them were built like tanks.
@emsquared Super 8! :)
And it is built like a tank, I thought it was loaded with film when I picked it up its so heavy!
@limneticvillains There are wonderfully cleaver people that DIY mod such cine cameras and put raspberry pi's in them with a pi cam and get wonderful faux digital 8mm footage. Would that I was that adept.
@emsquared you can use sellotape instead of soldering things right? Blue tac?
